A project at the crossroads of heritage and play
From the initial sketches, the question arose: how to accommodate a modern sporting activity in a site protected by the Flemish Heritage Agency without altering its soul or beauty?
The response required creativity, rigor, and constant dialogue between architects, owners, and heritage authorities.
The iconic exposed brick walls could neither be covered nor pierced.
This constraint led to a bold solution: self-supporting central structures installed at the heart of the chapel.
They preserve the architectural purity of the building while creating an immersive, bright, and harmonious play space.
Thus, the building maintains its visual integrity, while the young climbers progress in a setting that is both spectacular and respectful of the past.
Modern standards in a historical setting
Rehabilitating a nearly 100-year-old building to accommodate children represented a considerable technical challenge.
Every element — safety, insulation, accessibility, lighting — has been rethought with respect for the site and current requirements.
The project was able to rely on thearchitecture firm Anno, specialized in the restoration and enhancement of listed monuments, whose expertise allowed for a balance betweenaesthetic requirements and regulatory compliance..
Even the interior color palette underwent meticulous work topreserve visual uniformityand maintain the peaceful atmosphere of the original place.
These choices reflect a strong conviction: a living heritage must be able to reinvent itself without betraying itself.
An exceptional place serving families
Beyond the architectural challenge,Gravity Funis part of the broader mission of the monastery site: to offer families a space forwell-being, meeting, and development..
The climbing and psychomotor room complements the existing activities, such as theBabilou nursery.and thepartner NGOs, in a logic ofeducational and social coherence.
Here, heritage becomesa source of inspiration.
Children discover climbing in a setting steeped in history, parents enjoy a friendly space in the heart of the gardens, and everyone experiences something playful, calming, and rewarding.
A heritage that gives meaning and identity
Today,Gravity Funis pleased to have transformed a technical challenge intoan identity force.
The heritage character of the place is not just a backdrop: it contributes to theeducational and symbolic valueof the project.
Climbing under vaults, surrounded by century-old bricks, is learning to surpass oneself while respecting a legacy.
This dialogue between past and present makesGravity Funaunique place in Belgium: both a space for play, culture, and transmission.
